Marymass Jazz

New Orleans Joymakers at the Fourth Port festival

Some of the Joymakers played at the Fourth Port festival on 15 August while the whole band entertained a packed house for the annual Marymass festival concert on the 23rd August.

Those highly collectible cards with the band dates were also distributed on the 23rd but here’s another reminder of future gigs at the HAC;

  • Sunday 27th September
  • Sunday 25th October
  • Sunday 22nd November
  • Sunday 13th December

Our next performance at the HAC is 27th September. Please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment.

July Review

Another fine session on 26th July despite the absence on holiday in Arran (not Avalon or Treasure Island) of our ‘conductor’ Lennie Herd. Anyone curious about this term ‘conductor’ should consult George Melly’s Owning Up, surely the best account of traditional jazz ever written. Depping for Lennie was John Cowan, veteran trumpet player from darkest Dumfries, who did a splendid job in this role.

New Orleans Joymakers

Next performance at the HAC is the Jazz Special on Sunday 23rd August, part of the Irvine Marymass Festival programme. Usually a sell-out, so please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment.

May Review

New Orleans Joymakers

Another storming session on 24th May which seemed to go down well with the big audience present. Old favourites like Avalon, Dream, Just a Gigolo, Martha and Willie the Weeper were particularly popular but perhaps the highlight was Tony Lang playing guitar and reprising the Al Bowlly song ‘The masquerade is over’. Not a dry eye in the Arts Centre!

Upcoming Gigs

Our next gig at the Harbour Arts Centre is Sunday 28th June. Please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment.

April Review

Mose Allison

It was another swinging session at the HAC on Sunday 26th April. Requests for “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, “A kiss to build a dream on” and the ubiquitous “Stranger on the Shore” all went down well.

However, perhaps the highlight was Tony Lang’s rendition of the Mose Allison number “Eyesight for the Blind”. A real eye opener!

Upcoming Gigs

Our next gig at the Harbour Arts Centre is on Sunday 24th May. Please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment.

Easter Jazz

Sidney Bechet on Clarinet

Another swinging session on Sun 29th March. Some popular numbers, “Muskrat Ramble”, “Georgia”, “Savoy Blues” and “Royal Garden Blues” went down well as did some less familiar ones, “Dream”, “Martha” and “Lover Come Back to Me”.

Tommy’s clarinet feature, the Sidney Bechet inspired ballad “Si tu vois ma mere” got the acclaim which it certainly merited.

Upcoming Gigs

Our next gig at the HAC is Sunday 26th April. Please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment. Dates throughout the summer include, Sun 24th May, Sun 28th June, Sun 26th July and Sun 23rd August.

Joymakers at the Jazz Band Ball

New Orleans JoymakersAnother excellent attendance in February despite “River stay away from my door” weather. Those who did miss out might be interested to know that we did our usual mixture of old favourites and less familiar numbers. Thus “At the Jazz Band Ball”, “Yes Yes in Your Eyes” and “Just a Gigolo” were interspersed with “Breeze”, “Monday Date”, “Spain” and, specially for Lennie, “When the Midnight Choo Choo leaves for Alabam”.

On a more sombre note, we also played “High Society” in memory of Robin Whyte a long standing supporter of the band who passed away recently.

Upcoming Gigs

Our next gig at the Arts Centre is 29th March; please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment.

New Year Greetings

Joymakers fan - Rabbie BurnsGood attendance on Sunday 25th January for another swinging session on the Bard’s birthday (see left enjoying the show).

Jack Wilson is doing a great job as Hamish’s replacement on drums and is already very popular with the fans. No sign yet however of a washboard!

Meanwhile Graham Blamire remains unwell and we are very fortunate in being able to call upon the services of that excellent bassist, Eoin Millar.

Upcoming Gigs

Our next gig at the Arts Centre is 22 February; please book early on (01294 274059) to avoid disappointment.
