Marching In

Joymakers at HAC 26 MarchIt was a full house and fine session on Sunday 26 March. The two deps, Bob Busby and Bill Mullen did a great job as did former Vernon Jazzmen vocalist Marie Winton in her guest appearance.
Diary updates: Sunday 23 April, Sunday 21 May, Sunday 18 June, Sunday 9 July and Sunday 20 August. Remember, book early to avoid disappointment!

Marymass Special

Joymakers play at Marymass festival in Irvine.

Our Marymass Special attracted large numbers resulting in fact, once again, in a full house. Particularly well received were the 1920’s ballad, ‘Whispering’, Ken Colyers ‘Going Home’ and ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’ a comparatively rare number on jazz band tune lists. Also infrequently heard was Tony’s version, on guitar, of Flying Down to Rio. A nod to the Olympics of course!

We return to the HAC on Sunday 11th September so please book early on 01294 274059 to avoid disappointment.

“There Will Be Some Changes Made”

New Orleans Joymakers

Jack Wilson, our talented drummer has understandably found the “lonesome road” from Fife, where he now lives, to Irvine just a bit too far.

However, we have been very fortunate in obtaining the services of the legendary Kenny Mathieson, a big name in Scottish jazz for many years. Kenny will play his first session with the band on Sunday 19th June, our Father’s Day special!

January Review

Polar bear on way to jazz

“Button up your Overcoat” weather on the 17th though the band didn’t actually play that number. Very encouraging attendance despite the Arctic temperatures (a new joymakers fan was spotted at Irvine harbour!) Some less familiar tunes e.g “I want to be Happy”, “Sunshine of Love”, “Ciriciribin” and “I’m forever blowing bubbles” seemed to help the audience forget the conditions outside.

September Review

An exciting start on 27 September as Jack Wilson, delayed by road works in our third world traffic system beat all sorts of records for assembling a drum kit. Hats off to Jack!

Tunes played included some requests such as ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’, ‘At Sundown’ and in lieu of ‘Clarinet Marmalade’ which we didn’t attempt, ‘That’s a plenty’. Some less familiar numbers were ‘The best things in life are free’ and ‘You took advantage of me’.

As usual please book early on 01294 274059 for our next session on 25th October. Please note the HAC bar is closed for refurbishment from 19th to 31st October but refreshments should be made available in the foyer.
